Tampons Aren’t for Gun Shot Wounds

Caleb Causey from Lone Star Medics just published a nice writeup over on the Personal Defense Network site about the myth that tampons are great for packing gunshot wounds. We’ve all heard people mention it whenever the topic of medical kits or gunshot wounds comes up on shooting sites or at the range. I guess I never really gave it much thought, my medical kit doesn’t contain any tampons, but being rather inexperienced when it comes to gun shot wounds, it seemed plausible to me that they would work. Apparently they don’t.

Basically, it comes down to this: tampons aren’t made for stopping pressurized fluids like arterial bleeding, and they aren’t made for saving lives.

Check out the article over at Personal Defense Network, I enjoyed it.

  1. Our medic in iraq had them, and used them. Not the best solution, but anything is better than bleeding out.
