Houston Gun Store Robbery

Holy crap, this is nuts. If you assume there was one person in the truck, I count 10 people total. In daylight. Also, if you look how they go into the place, it seems like they all know exactly where they’re going, so they had to have scoped the place out beforehand. Also, what’s the deal with gun stores not locking up all their guns overnight in a safe? I thought that was that was …

Interesting Observation at Triangle Shooting Academy Today:

Everybody on the range was shooting competition targets. If you look closely, there’s a target that fell off the hanger in between the two IDPA targets, and it’s another IDPA target. Kind of cool, hopefully they’ll start having some competitions before long. I also can’t stress enough how beautiful this facility is. I’m actually sitting in the lounge as I write this having a cup of coffee (it’s not bad, BTW) and I I feel …

I’m not Shooting this Weekend.

I put up a post last week inviting anyone who wants to come shoot their first match to come out to the H2O Fowl Farms IDPA match tomorrow and I’d show you the ropes. As luck would have it, my car has been in the shop since Monday evening, and I’m still not mobile yet. It’s also supposed to snow today on top of being cold tomorrow. Call me a softie, but I think I’m …

Cannibalism

Boy howdy, gun owners in the Triangle area are eating their own this week. Triangle Shooting Academy opened last Friday, and instead of seeing the opportunity that comes along with having a new shooting range in the area, a lot of folks are hung up on one thing that I don’t really think is that big of a deal. Above is the graphic posted on the front door at Triangle Shooting Academy. I’ve seen posts …

Carolina Guns and Gear USPSA Match Promo Video

This is cool as heck. I remember the drone flying around while we were shooting, but I guess I forgot about it. I know there are a few podcast listeners and friends of the show in the video, and there’s a few seconds of me shooting at 2:07. Want to know more? Here’s my primer on getting started in competitive shooting, and here’s the Facebook page for the Carolina Guns and Gear Range.

On Burnout

Let’s talk about burnout. Burnout happens in shooting. A lot. In fact, this post is inspired by Karla Herdzik, formerly a sponsored 3 gun shooter for FN among others, hanging up her shooting jersey. I haven’t talked to her about it, and she didn’t explicitly say so, but that’s what I read in her post: Over the years, I missed numerous family birthdays and friend outings, and spent countless nights in hotel rooms across the …

I love Dave Ramsey

I’m a big fan of Dave Ramsey and his message of becoming debt free. I listen to all 3 hours of his podcast every day, and my wife and I are big time budgeters and are working on getting out of debt ourselves. I’ve heard Dave say this on the air several times: “I only carry 3 pieces of plastic in my wallet, my drivers license, my debit card, and my Tennessee concealed handgun permit.” …

Gear That Doesn’t Suck: SHOT Show Edition

Every year I skip SHOT show. I’ve never been, and I honestly I’ve never regretted the decision to stay home. Yeah, it would be cool to see some of the cool new things, but it seems like every year right after SHOT, all of my blogger/podcast/new media type friends are sick as dogs after catching the funk that apparently grows in the convention center. So, I present you with this special edition Gear That Doesn’t …

How to set up a practice range for $500

A recent episode of The Practical Pistol Show had an interesting discussion of how to set up a home range for USPSA practice for under $500 (language NSFW): The recommendation to use non-falling steel (8″ plates instead of poppers) is very interesting for a few reasons. One, it’s cheaper, which if you’re building a home range is important. Two, it highlights the difference between matches and practice. In a match, you want falling steel so …
