Thoughts on a BUG division gun, and what’s the deal with hang-fires during a match?

Tony sends in today’s Q&A voicemail asking 2 things: What’s a good handgun for BUG (Back Up Gun) division in IDPA, and how is a hang-fire handled during a match?

He said he liked the Ruger LC9s, which we both agree is a fine pistol, however, if either of us were buying a singlestack 9mm today, we’d both buy a Springfield Armory XDs, because it’s just simply fantastic.

Hang-fires are just shucked out of the gun, and you keep shooting. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a round that someone has racked out go off later on, and I’ve seen a LOT of people have rounds that don’t go off at matches.
