Are double action only triggers competitive?

Tony in Kansas City sends in today’s Q&A voicemail, which is a follow-up to his first voicemail a couple months ago. He was looking for a pistol for concealed carry and IDPA BUG division. Ben and I suggested that he look at the S&W Shield, Springfield XDs, and maybe another pistol or two. Tony went to the range and rented a few guns, and then the Range Officer let him try his Kahr PM9.

His question is: are double action only pistols competitive?

BUG division isn’t super competitive. It’s a place for people to come shoot the guns that they actually carry, but it’s not the place that people generally build competition guns. I say if you like the PM9 best, go for it, and shoot it in IDPA, no problem.

  1. Agreed on the PM9 (I have the CM9, which is essentially a less expensive version of the same gun). It’s great to carry, and I’ve shot it well in BUG matches. One small correction: the Kahr trigger is not double-action. It feels like it is, but it’s actually just a long and relatively heavy single-action trigger.
