Tomorrow on the Q&A Show: Live Match Video Diagnosis

One of the more common questions I hear from folks just starting out in competitive shooting is that they don’t know what to look for in their match video.  Tomorrow on the Facebook Live Q&A podcast I’m going to be doing a live match video diagnosis based on my match video from Sunday’s USPSA match. We’ll go through it stage by stage, talk about the things that went well and the things that… didn’t. Don’t …

CZ Shadow 2 is now USPSA Production Legal

Yeah, you’re exactly right when you read the title of this post and said to yourself “Wasn’t it already legal?” No, it wasn’t, but it seems like everyone and their brother has been shooting them in Production division for a while anyways. As of the time of this article being written, the CZ Shadow 2 is officially on the USPSA Production list. There was a bunch of consternation earlier today from folks thinking that CZ …

The Fastest Way to get Disqualified…

As a Range Officer, telling someone that they’re disqualified from a match sucks. It sucks even more if the person hasn’t even fired a shot. I’ve always told people interested in competitive shooting to just bring along whatever gear they’ve got, as long as it’s safe, and worry about buying competition specific stuff later. Unfortunately I’ve noticed a trend over the past couple years of people getting disqualified when they’re using holsters that come with …

Things That Make You Go “Ugghhh” At A Match

Every quarter of the year I’ve been having an episode of the podcast where I play listener voicemails answering a question that I propose. In the past I’ve asked “What has competitive shooting done for you?” and “What are your 2017 goals?” This time around I want to have a little more fun with it: What makes you go “ugghhh” at a match? There are several ways you can send in a voicemail: Call (781) 728-5538 …

Make Hardcover Targets the Easy Way

I wanted some hardcover targets for practice tomorrow, so I went out to the garage to tape and paint some up. Low and behold, I’m fresh out of black paint of any kind. I considered just using the tape, but decided that wouldn’t be good enough. Then I thought about dying them with coffee, but that seemed like a pain in the butt. Then my eyes found the can of Minwax Dark Walnut wood stain …

Cash Money for Winning With Your Walther

This is actually pretty awesome. Here’s the details: http://www.waltherarms.com/winwithwalther/ I’m not aware of any other programs like this that pay out cash for winning. I like it. If you shoot a Walther, it’s time to start practicing.

Match Video Diagnosis: Reloads

Reloads are a place where you can shave some time, and impress your friends if you can really nail them perfectly and quickly. I’m just ending an extended off-season so my reloads are a little shaky, and in the above video you’ll see that. First reload: super slow Second: seated, not super fast, but faster than the first Third: slow, and you can tell I wasn’t ready for it. Fourth: slide lock reload where I …

Match Video Diagnosis: Get Your Butt Moving

It probably goes without saying, but one of the best and easiest ways to shave time on your matches and move yourself up in the rankings is to RUN from one position to another. Action shooting games are about speed and accuracy, both of which are equally important. If you’ve got a stage where there’s a lot of room to move, and no shooting to do while moving, RUN. I see a lot of folks …

Match Video Diagnosis: Know Where You’re Supposed to Go

Movement is one of the best things you can assess with match video. In the video clip above, watch how much more confidently I move into the first position, than the second position. You can tell as I’m moving into the second position I wasn’t quite sure where the fault line was and I didn’t have a good plan for that position other than the order I wanted to engage the targets. I think the …

Diagnosing Your Match Video: Shooting Sooner

A video posted by Lucas Apps (@triangletactical) on Jan 18, 2017 at 9:12am PST I’ve heard Steve Anderson talk about “shooting sooner” a thousand times, and it really became apparent after looking at my match video from last Saturday. In the video above, I engaged the targets to the left while on the move, then transitioned my sights to the first target on the right, but didn’t start shooting at it until I took like …
