S&W Shield No Thumb Safety

So, I found this on Facebook tonight… I don’t know if it’s real, or where it was originally published, but I really hope it’s  real. The safety was the thing that made the S&W Shield not as good as it could have been, and hopefully S&W has been listening. I went so far as to work on prototyping an extended safety for the Shield (here and here) but if I can get a Shield without …

Goodbye M&P, Hello Glock 34

After talking about it for a number of years I finally picked up a Glock 34 to shoot in competition. I moved away from Glocks temporarily because I was having slide bite issues, and the new beavertail backstraps hadn’t been released yet for the Gen4 pistols. Now they are, and I’m back. I’m not a “Glock guy” (see Episode 24 of the podcast) but I have found that I prefer them over the M&P’s I’ve …

May the 4th be With Glock?

Someone please focus your Jedi powers and give me some advanced notice about these new Glock models that Glockmeister is claiming that will be released tomorrow. I’ve heard a couple rumblings from other places about this too, but Glockmeister seems to be the only place that has a specific date (May 5th). Are they trolling us? Is this for real? Who knows. I’ve said it before, I’m kind of over it. If a singlestack 9mm …

Budget Reloading Setup Tour

Y’all asked for it, so here goes: (Link for Email/RSS Readers) Quick note: It looks like my press is moving a bit when I work the lever. This is because my tripod was in the way, so I didn’t have my foot on the workbench like I do when I’m loading normally.

Adventures in Reloading #1 – It’s too Long

In episode 78 of the podcast I mentioned that I had loaded up and shot my first reloads. I loaded a bunch of 125gr round nose bullets from The Blue Bullets (local NC company, you should support them) over some Unique powder that I picked up from Lucky 13 Cast Bullets (also a local NC company, you should support them too) and headed off to the Monday night Action Pistol match at the Wake County …

Extended S&W Shield Safety Prototyping #2

Earlier this week I mentioned that I’ve been considering making an extended safety for my S&W Shield 9mm because the standard safety is miserable. The JB Weld that I used to add material to the extra safety lever has mostly cured (I didn’t have a lot of hardener, so it took a bit longer than I expected), and I had time to install it. It’s not big, just a hair bigger than the standard safety: …

Extended S&W Shield Safety Prototyping

If you’ve been reading Triangle Tactical for any length of time, you’ll know that I’ve had a love/hate relationship with my S&W Shield 9mm for some time now. It’s a good pistol, but I absolutely hate the safety. If I had it my way, the pistol wouldn’t even have it, but since it has a safety, I feel the need to use it just in case it were to get bumped into the on position …

Gearing Up For The Day-Night-Day Match: Luke’s Gear

I’ve been shooting competitively in this area for 4ish years, and finally the stars have aligned, and I’m going to be able to shoot the Day-Night-Day match at The Range in Oxford, NC. This match consists of 3 IDPA matches: the first match shot Saturday afternoon, the second after dark Saturday night, and the third Sunday morning. Info at The-Range.com Flashlight: The night portion of the match is the reason that I’m so excited about …

Ultimate Shield Project: Apex Duty Carry Trigger

This is part one in a series of posts on turning a run of the mill S&W M&P Shield into the ultimate concealed carry pistol. The first thing that needed to be addressed with the Shield 9mm was the trigger. I was happy with the weight of the trigger from the factory, but it was gritty, and had a false reset that is common with many of the M&P pistols. My first stop when looking …

S&W M&P 9mm Magazine Follower Design Change?

I was recently able to order a couple of M&P 9mm magazines from Midway, and the new magazine followers are just a little different from the M&P magazines that I have purchased in the past. The part of the follower that pushes up on the slide stop appears to have a small bevel on it that is absent on the older followers. When inserting the new magazines into the pistol, the new follower will sometimes …
