Holy Crap Ammo Prices!

This afternoon I ventured out to find a box or two of Remington Golden Sabres in the 124gr (standard or +P, I don’t really care) variety. I had remembered a pretty reasonable price from the last time I was at Bass Pro in Cary, so I decided to hit Gander Mountain first, and then go to Bass Pro on the way home of Gander didn’t have what I needed. When I arrived at Gander Mountain, …

Home Invasion While in the Shower

A SC man was the victim of a home invasion while he was in the shower recently. He got out of the shower, retrieved a firearm, confronted the home invaders firing a shot in the process. A Cameron man called authorities Wednesday after firing a shot at would-be burglars inside his residence. He said he was taking a shower about 3:20 p.m. when he heard a noise coming from his living room. He said he …

House Rules for Guns

Do you have house rules for guns? I’ve got a couple that I implemented a long time ago, and I still follow: No chambered rounds in the house. I started this way back when I first started carrying concealed. I was somewhat inexperienced with handguns, and it made me feel better to have an empty chamber when home. Years and years later, I still pop a round into the chamber on my way out the …

How Many Rounds Should a Singlestack 9mm Pistol Hold?

How much capacity do you require in a carry sized singlestack 9mm pistol? A couple nights ago I had my Springfield XDs 9mm, and S&W Shield 9mm sitting on the coffee table as I was comparing and contrasting them. I guess that I hadn’t really noticed that while being just about the same size, the XDs 9mm has the ability to carry an extra round in the extended magazine over the Shield. Flying with a Firearm – Revisited

Some time ago, I shot a quick video about how I fly with a firearm in my checked baggage, and every year about this time I get a couple questions from readers on this topic, so I thought I would revisit it once more. I’m not linking to the video, because I was really fat back then, and it’s somewhat embarrassing… click to enlarge I tend to go above and beyond the TSA and airline …

Southnarc: Managing Unknown Contacts

As a community of self defense minded folks we’re quick to practice our shooting skills, and even quicker to buy a new gadget to carry. One thing that most of us are probably lacking is practice and training when it comes to avoiding incidents all together. We talk about situational awareness, keeping our heads on a swivel and all that stuff, but not much about what to do after we are confronted by someone. I …

Why Carry at Home?

I think this is a pretty good reason. Last year there was a pretty heinous home invasion in downtown Raleigh, in a “good” neighborhood. pleaded guilty to rape, sex offense, robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. I carry at home because if someone gets the jump on me, I won’t have time to open the safe and get my gun.

It’s Time for Constitutional Carry

This week has shown us two examples of why gun registration is a raw deal for law abiding gun owners: An Illinois man successfully defended himself and his daughter from a midnight break-in using his gun. Instead of getting time to deal with the stress that must come along with taking a life, he was arrested and charged with having an expired FOID (registered gun owner) card. Did I mention that he was on crutches? …

TWANGnBANG Shoots a Windshield

TWANGnBANG on YouTube does some pretty awesome testing with my favorite 9mm round for concealed carry and a car windshield. Check it out! Note how little penetration the round gets into the gel block after going through the windshield. Interesting stuff.

Just to be Clear: Your Laser Sight is a Sight

And your weapon mounted light, is a sight too. We all read the news earlier this week about the NY State Homeland Security cheif being incredibly irresponsible using his laser sight as a laser pointer during a presentation. This is something that we all agree isn’t kosher. Unfortunately if we swap out laser with weapon light, some folks I  the firearm community change their mind. Let’s back up a bit: I want a weapon mounted …
