Last night I had the opportunity to go to Personal Defense and Handgun Safety Center in Raleigh, NC for their monthly IDPA match. I’ve been shooting club matches in the triangle area for almost 3 years, but for some reason, I had never made it to this match before yesterday.
I enjoyed the match, and tried to push myself. I thought I was shooting well, however in reviewing the video of all of the stages, I made some dumb mistakes that cost me several points. I fumbled a tac-reload which cost me several seconds, and then I took a procedural because I was not behind cover when making the tac-reload (I think I was behind cover, but we all know that cover in IDPA is subjective).
There were a lot of shooters at the match, and we broke into 3 squads, which helped to keep the match moving. Even so, stage 7 ended up getting scrubbed, so we shot 7 stages overall.
While shooting my S&W M&P9 Pro I’m finding that I am having trouble finding the front sight quickly. I’m still running the factory Novak sights, which have a fairly narrow rear notch compared to the width of the front sight. I also feel that the green fiber-optic in the front sight, while great outdoors, wasn’t catching very much light indoors. I’m still running a crappy holster that I made quickly, which I am finding moves around on my belt too much, and isn’t the best for drawing from any position but standing.
I ended up taking first place for SSP, and I believe 7th overall, which I’m happy with, as the shooters that placed above me are all much higher caliber, and more serious about IDPA than I am.
Anyways, here’s the video from the match. Thanks again to Ben for shooting it.
