This morning I headed over to my local Dick’s Sporting Goods to look for some cleats for shooting USPSA in, and I of course found myself over in the shooting department after locating the shoes I wanted. I hadn’t been in Dick’s in a while and I was quite surprised to see the amount of AR-15 accessories, and black rifles they had on the wall. I noticed they had some shotgun shells on sale, so I grabbed a box, and after browsing for a while I decided to head out.
When I got to the register, the cashier began to ring me out for the ammo, and asked me for my birth date. After entering that, and then asking to look at my drivers license, a prompt came up on the pin-pad asking “Are you a US citizen?”. I happened to have my cell phone in hand, so before checking yes, I snapped a quick picture. (Sorry for the blurry picture, my phone sucks.)
Is Dick’s doing this in order to keep ammo out of the hands of illegal aliens? Are they just trying to find out how many US citizens they sell ammo to? I don’t know. I also do not know what would have happened had I checked “No”, as there are LEGAL immigrants, or resident aliens who are 100% legal to purchase firearms and ammo.
It’s interesting, and I’m not sure that I like it. What do you think?
I am a legal green card holder and I just hit the "Yes" button each time to save myself the embarrassment of potentially being turned away.
To Dicks Sporting Good in Bluffton,
My son who is and looks very native American came in your store to buy ammunition and was asked by the cashier if he was a US citizen, not thinking anything of it answered yes,but when the computer ask him again, he ask the cashier why did you ask me that also. His replied was because we don’t want Mexicans and Canadians coming in here shooting us up with our own bullets. Me being very upset about this stereotyping and racial remark called the manager and he told me that it was store policy; I then said my husband who doesn’t look native America/Mexican came in and no one ask him any questions. He then started back tracking and saying it was up to the cashier if they ask or not. I told him I would be calling corporate office to ask what the policy was and going to post on their fb page, he told me that I shouldn’t post this because of one cashier…yea ok! So if you are of native America/Mexican/Canadian decedent, you are not welcome in Dicks Sporting Goods
