This weekend every major news outlet has picked up the story of Jovan Belcher, a NFL linebacker who murdered his girlfriend, killed himself, and left his young daughter orphaned.
Jason Whitlock, of Fox Sports published an article damning the 2nd Amendment, asking the following:
” How many lives have to be ruined before we realize the right to bear arms doesn’t protect us from a government equipped with stealth bombers, predator drones, tanks and nuclear weapons?”
What Mr. Whitlock fails to realize, is that it was not the gun that murdered Ms. Perkins, it was Mr. Belcher. Mr. Belcher’s choice to murder Ms. Perkins is what ended her life, not the handgun. You see, had Mr. Belcher not had a handgun, he probably still would have murdered Ms. Perkins, because he made the choice to do so.
Bob Costas picked up Whitlocks article, and paraphrased it during the halftime show of the Kansas City Chiefs game Sunday, and instead of focusing on delivering a message to the viewers that there is help available for those who feel the need to end their life, Costas took the same road as Whitlock, blaming the 2nd Amendment, and handguns for the actions of a murderer.
This is a classic tactic by those who do not support our freedoms. They find a tragedy, where people are still grieving over a murder/suicide, and attempt to use emotions to drum up public support for gun control. What people like Costas, and Whitlock aren’t telling you, is that there thousands upon thousands of innocent women who have protected themselves from being murdered with handguns. All across America, law abiding citizens carry firearms every day, and we don’t have blood running in the streets!
The focus here needs to be on two things: The first being this infant who is now left orphaned, who will now need lots of love and care to make it through this. I pray that there is a close member of the family that is taking care of this child. The second focus needs to be on awareness. For anyone coming across this article, I want to make it very clear, if you have thoughts or feelings about suicide, get help. There are very talented people out there who can help you through whatever you are going through. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline phone number is 1-800-273-8255, and you can be connected with a counselor who can help you.
