Yesterday I posted about shot calling, with a great video from Shooting USA explaining what it is. On Sunday, I headed up to The Range in Oxford, NC to try my hand at calling shots, and I failed miserably. While doing some reading on the topic over the past few days, it appears that there are a few factors that go into it: 1. The first factor is that some shooters instinctively blink when their …

I debated whether or not to even post this video. Sunday I shot IDPA at The Range in Oxford, NC. If you have never shot here before, you need to know that this range is owned by Frank Glover, who is one of the best stage designers out there. Frank has a way of designing a stage that looks simple, yet will complete screw up your brain. He got me on Sunday. Holy crap, I’ve …

If you have been around competitive shooting for any length of time, you have probably heard the term “Calling your shots” or “Shot calling”. Shot calling is the theory of knowing where your bullets are impacting based on your sight picture right before the shot breaks. Shooting USA did a great Pro Tip video with Cpl. Travis Tomasie a couple years ago that goes into great detail on calling shots, check it out below: The …

Ohio legislators have introduced a bill that would make it illegal to carry concealed in a private place without permission from the owner. So instead of letting businesses post that they do not allow concealed carry, businesses would be required to post that they do allow concealed carry. Pretty bass-ackwards if you ask me! Link to writeup on Ohio bill.

Let’s talk about “Bob”. Bob is that guy you know who is into shooting, owns some guns, and maybe does some shooting on a fairly regular basis. Bob listens to you talk about competitive shooting, and says things like “I’d like to try that!”, or “That looks like fun!” Several times I’ve asked Bob to come shoot with me, but his answer is always something like “I’m not good enough,” “I don’t have the gear,” …

I’ve always preferred USGI aluminum magazines for my AR-15 over plastic mags. I like how the aluminum magazines lay flat against each other, the way they lock into the rifle, and just about everything else about them. Last night I did, however, find their weakness. Every month of so, I shoot an action rifle match at the Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center. These action matches require reloading on the move, and while executing …

After posting about my Firesteel.com fire starter, a couple of you asked about these Coghlan’s fire starters that can be found at just about any sporting goods store. I came across mine this morning, and figured I’d show you guys how it works. The idea with this firestarter is very similar to other firesteels, except this one keeps everything in one unit. Basically it’s just a firesteel glued into a piece of magnesium. This allows …

Recently the video below has begun to make it’s way around the ‘net. It’s a good watch. Until I watched the video, I was not aware of Mr. Barrett’s history for standing up for the rights of citizens to own firearms. I found this letter that Mr. Barrett wrote to the LAPD some years ago regarding their proposed ban of .50 caliber firearms. December 11, 2002 Dear Chief Bratton, I, a U.S. citizen, own Barrett …

The city of Chicago is asking Twitter users how to solve their illegal gun problem, using the hashtag #WhatifChicago. I think we all know that the problem is their history of corruption, their former ban on handguns that was struck down by the Supreme Court, and their lack of legally armed citizens. Everywhere else in the country when concealed carry is allowed, violent crime rates fall. It’s pretty simple! Get over to Twitter, use the …

Its been a couple months since I posted my initial thoughts on the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm Pro. Since writing about that, the pistol has become my primary competition pistol, and I’ve used it in every match I have shot since picking it up. Accuracy: Right off the bat, this pistol throws lead very accurately. At 25 yards it has groupedĀ 5 rounds atĀ 2.5″ or less, and in matches, I have routinely placed rounds into …
