Franks Fun Match 12-16-2012

I made it up to Franks Fun Match at The Range in Oxford, NC a couple weeks ago. Due to the small crowd that showed up on a rainy day, Frank had us run 4 stages, and we shot them both twice. It was interesting to see the improvements made on the second string, as well as the mistakes that were made after running the same stage a second time. I learned that I need …

BUG Match Goodness!

This past weekend I had the opportunity to shoot a BUG (Back Up Gun) match down at H2O Fowl Farms in Dunn, NC. I shot my crusty old Kel-Tec PF-9, and it performed about how I would expect it to, poorly. The match was a hoot, and H2O Fowl Farms is now planning a 12 stage BUG match at the end of January. I think I need to get a different BUG pistol before the …

Rifle vs. Carbine Length Buffer System

Back on election night around 10:00pm, when it became apparent that Obama was going to win re-election, I went on a little online shopping spree. I purchased a couple AR lower receivers, and an A2 lower parts kit. It’s obvious why I purchased the lower receivers, but even I wasn’t quite sure why I purchased the A2 LPK. Anyways, I received everything, and built the A2 lower a week or so ago. The kit I …

NCJA Charity Challenge AAR

As you probably know, on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, I attended the North Carolina Justice Academy Charity Challenge at the Justice Academy in Salemburg, NC. This was a pistol match with all of the money taken in going to Hope for the Warrior, which is a charity for wounded troops. We arrived around 7:00am, and it was just above freezing outside, and I quickly learned that I did not wear enough layers. Thankfully it warmed …

What Happened to Taran Butler at the 2012 IDPA Nationals?

Recently Taran Butler, (well known professional shooter) joined Matt Burkett on Burkett’s Practical Shooting podcast (Which is really good by the way, I wish Matt would crank out weekly episodes). They talked about several topics, such as Taran’s new business, 3-gun nation, shotguns, and the 2012 IDPA Nationals which took place right here in Eastern NC. Taran began to talk about the 2012 IDPA Nationals, and stated that in the past the Nationals have been …

Learning to Call Shots

Yesterday I posted about shot calling, with a great video from Shooting USA explaining what it is. On Sunday, I headed up to The Range in Oxford, NC to try my hand at calling shots, and I failed miserably. While doing some reading on the topic over the past few days, it appears that there are a few factors that go into it: 1. The first factor is that some shooters instinctively blink when their …

Epic Fail

I debated whether or not to even post this video. Sunday I shot IDPA at The Range in Oxford, NC. If you have never shot here before, you need to know that this range is owned by Frank Glover, who is one of the best stage designers out there. Frank has a way of designing a stage that looks simple, yet will complete screw up your brain. He got me on Sunday. Holy crap, I’ve …

Calling Your Shots

If you have been around competitive shooting for any length of time, you have probably heard the term “Calling your shots” or “Shot calling”. Shot calling is the theory of knowing where your bullets are impacting based on your sight picture right before the shot breaks. Shooting USA did a great Pro Tip video with Cpl. Travis Tomasie a couple years ago that goes into great detail on calling shots, check it out below: The …

Shut Up and Shoot!

Let’s talk about “Bob”. Bob is that guy you know who is into shooting, owns some guns, and maybe does some shooting on a fairly regular basis. Bob listens to you talk about competitive shooting, and says things like “I’d like to try that!”, or “That looks like fun!” Several times I’ve asked Bob to come shoot with me, but his answer is always something like “I’m not good enough,” “I don’t have the gear,” …
