Bizarro Week: I love Podcasts

Ok, so this isn’t totally off topic being that I’m a podcaster, but I love podcasts.

Yesterday I logged into my feedly app on my phone, and realized that I hadn’t logged in and read any of my favorite blogs in almost a month. I guess I just don’t have a lot of time to read blogs and forums these days, but I can tell you that I’m 100% up to date with all of the podcasts I listen to.

I like them because I get to hear the hosts voice, and I get to know them. I’ve been listening to Jack Spirko for years, and I feel like I know the guy well enough that if we found ourselves in a bar it would be like sharing a beer with an old friend.

I like podcasts because I can consume them while doing other things. When I’m in my office at work, or driving my car I can listen to podcasts, but I can’t sit and read (or watch videos for that matter).

I like podcasts because radio sucks. I’ve always been fascinated by broadcasting, radio, antenna theory, etc. The idea of broadcasting my voice over an area for people to listen is awesome. Unfortunately terrestrial radio these days is so full of ads that you hardly get any content. There’s one radio show that I listen to frequently, well, actually I download the podcast so I don’t have to listen to the ads, and an “hour” of programming minus the ads translates into a 35 minute podcast.

Podcasting is awesome because it’s time shifted, unlike radio. We record on Sunday night, and release episode usually around midnight that same night. Nobody is listening right then, but over the next day, lots of downloads occur and our listeners can then listen to our show whenever they want, unlike radio. I released Episode 1 of the Triangle Tactical Podcast a year and a half ago, and it’s still out there, ready go be listened to, as if it was released yesterday.

All this to say, podcasts rock. If you are a blogger, you should start a podcast. We use cheap $39 mics, in super cheap homemade mic stands to record our show over Skype, and I think we sound pretty good. If you are a blog reader, you should check out some podcasts: I recommend our show, Chaz over at Roadgunner, The Gun Dudes, The Powerfactor Show, and The Survival Podcast.
