Another Reason to Repeal the NC Pistol Purchase Permit: It’s Confusing

Tonight I had a long conversation with a good friend who is a police officer in the Durham area. We were talking about the possibility of getting the laws allowing the Durham County Gun Registry repealed, and he brought up a really good point about why we need the the NC Pistol Purchase Permit repealed.

Now, I seem to remember there being some fine print on my old PPP’s (haven’t seen one in years) about how it’s only for purchasing, and not for carrying a pistol, but it’s still confusing that you may need to go to the Sheriffs office to get one of two different permits. I wonder how many people are out there who do this very same thing that end up losing their right to carry because of an honest mistake?

  1. “I wonder how many people are out there who do this very same thing that end up losing their right to carry because of an honest mistake?”

At the risk of being accused of uttering a pithy remark; God I hope not too many! This isn’t rocket science.

I believe it is incumbent of all people possessing firearms to educate themselves in what is and isn’t legal concerning firearm ownership.

    • I absolutely agree that people should educate themselves on the laws and regulations regarding concealed carry, and I also know that this isn’t the strongest argument for ditching the PPP, but it’s just one more strike. Check out the post I made on Facebook about this, we’ve got the LEO I talked to, a second LEO, and someone who works at a gun store all saying that this is a very common occurrence.

  2. Yeah, I read that post. I do agree with the argument to a certain extent.

Now having said that, I will say that while I do believe all law-abiding citizens should have the right to purchase and own firearms, there are some people that would be better off simply choosing to not exercise that right.

  3. It has been a while since I have seen an NC pistol permit due to my Concealed Carry Permit. But if memory serves me right doesn’t it actually say something along the lines of “This is a permit to purchase a handgun and not a permit to carry concealed.” I might be wrong.

  4. The reason to repeal that stupid purchase permit is because it was created for the most racist of reasons! You have to obtain either two or three “character references” in your application, people who can attest to your good character. It also asks whether you are acquainted with any police officers. That is a process for verification that has simply not kept up with the times, and the intent of which is quite clear–if you were black, your ‘character references’ could be harder to obtain and maybe a lot of people wouldn’t go to the trouble. As a newcomer to Raleigh, I had a hard time obtaining character references because I was a stranger in town and yet I already owned about a dozen handguns at the time. So what exactly was the point? Also, you can spin over to Durham and buy a handgun without any permit or background check, so again, what is the point?

The fingerprinting requirement on the CHL there needs to be removed as well. There is simply no value in all that extra work except to attempt to create a chilling effect on permit applications.

Look at the hoops people who apply for a non-carry gun permit in DC have to go through! All the while, the city is full of armed agents–you can barely walk down any street in DC and not spot someone’s magazine holder or other giveaways and yet they want to restrict regular people as much as possible. Corruption.
