As stated before, there are four components of Fire: Spark Tinder Kindling Fuel We have covered Spark already, so today we …

Eleven Years.

I don’t have a whole lot to say today. Dwelling on the topic of the 9/11/2001 attacks still bring me a lot of emotion. I will leave you with this: Never forget. Never forget how you felt when you knew we were under attack. That uneasy feeling, the fear, the anger, and every other emotion. Never forget those who were lost, those who fought back knowing they would die to keep all of us on …

Fire Week – Day 1 – Spark

As part of National Preparedness Month, I am going to spend this week discussing the components of fire. How to make it, and how to sustain it.  Some of you may not think that building a fire is that big of a deal, and many times it is not, however trying to build a fire when you need one, during sub-optimal conditions can be a challenge at best, and life or death at worst. After the mass shooting in Colorado I discussed this with Chris Clifton from Defensive Concepts NC, and he told me that a lot of people who buy firearms for protection do not know enough to …

Johnston County, NC removes shooting ban from proposed noise ordinance.

Last month news came out of Johnston County, NC that they were planning to instate a new noise ordinance for the county that would effectively make any shooting, other than hunting and self defense illegal. This riles the feathers of many residents, and even non-residents, and the community fought back. A petition was started, as well as a Facebook page (which gained nearly 2,000 ‘likes’ in just a couple weeks). The wording from the petition …

September – National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month. Preparedness means a lot of different things to different people, and this month I plan to write a good bit about what preparedness means to me. I’ve mentioned before that I am an Eagle Scout. I was active in scouting from the first grade, all the way until I graduated from high school. One of the most important lessons I learned from scouting was practical preparedness. We never sat down …

DIY – Pine Cone Stove

Years ago when I was a Boy Scout, I had a scoutmaster that had a cool little wood burning stove that he would use on occasion at different camping events. The cool thing about this stove is that it folds up completely flat, taking up almost no room in a pack, which if you have ever done much backpacking, you know that is a good thing. It was one of those things that would pop …
