Competition

New Blaster, New Holster

On Sunday I had the opportunity to go shoot IDPA at The Range in Oxford, NC. I’m not a huge IDPA shooter these days, but I take it for what it is, and go shoot to have a good time. I had the new Glock 34 riding in the brand new (literally picked it up 20 minutes before the match started) D&D holster, shooting my reloads. I took a procedural penalty on the first stage …

Goodbye M&P, Hello Glock 34

After talking about it for a number of years I finally picked up a Glock 34 to shoot in competition. I moved away from Glocks temporarily because I was having slide bite issues, and the new beavertail backstraps hadn’t been released yet for the Gen4 pistols. Now they are, and I’m back. I’m not a “Glock guy” (see Episode 24 of the podcast) but I have found that I prefer them over the M&P’s I’ve …

WCFETC Action Matches Cancelled

I’m a sad panda this morning. Last night those of us who shoot the WCFETC Action matches received word that the matches are cancelled going forward. I’m sorry to hear it, as these Monday night shooting matches were some of my favorite shooting matches around. I want to publicly thank Joel Pendergraft for running the matches over the past few years. I know he put in a lot of work and did it because he …

When You Actually Shoot Guns, They Break

Local shooter, all around good dude, 3-Gun Nation Pro Series competitor, and the man who sold me my first Glock, Tommy Smith had a mishap with his Timberwolf framed Glock at the Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center Action Pistol match last night: He said the rear frame rails let go and separated from the frame which looks like it caused the slide to ride up over the trigger housing. Tommy wants to know: …

NC Rifle & Pistol Association State Games

I’m apparently out of the loop a little bit, so this information is a little out of date, but I still wanted to get this out. The North Carolina Rifle & Pistol Association is hosting some NC state shooting games. In May they have already had a Cowboy Action and IDPA match, and over the next month or so they will be having High Power, USPSA, 2-Gun Rimfire, Small Bore, Bullseye Pistol, and Vintage Military …

Would You Shoot This Match?

If I told you that later this year there was going to be a match that consisted of sample stages from all of the different shooting sports in a low-stress, fun environment, would you come out and try your hand at competitive shooting? Details are still a little slim, but John from ZSA is planning a match for one day this fall to have Steel Challenge, USPSA, ZSA, and possibly IDPA stages setup so that …

130 Shooters At a Club Match

On Saturday I shot USPSA at Sir Walter Gun Club with about 130 other gun nuts.  This was just a regular monthly match at Sir Walter, nothing particularly special about it, other than the beautiful weather. While we were shooting the match at Sir Walter here in NC, the USPSA Singlestack and Revolver Nationals were taking place in Barry, IL, as well as a 3-Gun Nation Pro Series event in Tulsa, OK. The big story …

Guns and Barbells on the Tarheel 3-Gun Challenge

Karla from Team FNH just did a writeup on her blog about the Tarheel 3-Gun Challenge which took place just a few minutes drive from downtown Raleigh last week. I haven’t shot the Tarheel 3-Gun Challenge, but I have several friends who are TH3G regulars who have all given me great feedback about the match. In a sport that’s increasingly morphing towards shorter-faster-burn-em-down stages, Tarheel stands out as a distinctly rifle match. Of the 8 …

Caswell Ranch Cancels all Monthly Matches

A post just came across my Facebook feed from Dean at Caswell Ranch. He is cancelling all monthly matches in order to keep the range open for members on the weekends. Post by Caswell Ranch Pistol & Rifle Range. I’ve already removed all of the matches from the calendar. I’m sorry to see a range cease holding competitions, but I understand that any business needs to adjust to the wants and needs of their customer …
