The Perfect Deer Rifle? Ruger American Ranch

Last week Ruger announced a couple of new rifles in their American Rifle lineup. The new rifles are called the American Rifle Ranch series, and they are available in .223/5.56 and .300 Blackout. Something about a short, handy, .300BLK bolt action rifle that weighs under 6lbs screams at me that it’s the perfect deer rifle for the little NC deer we have around here. Couple that with the law changing last fall to allow hunting …

Practicing Without Eyes and Ears

Recently I came across a Facebook post that advocated practicing shooting without wearing eyes and ears because when the balloon goes up you won’t have time to put them on, so you need to practice without them. Astonishingly, many of the responses to the post stated that they also practice shooting without wearing eyes and ears in order to get the full effect so they won’t be surprised when/if they ever have to use their …

Would You Buy a Painted Gun?

I recently had the opportunity to purchase a pistol that had been painted (ceracoat), but I wasn’t able to close the deal. To me, removing the factory finish on the pistol, and applying something else is always inferior to the factory finish. Would you purchase a pistol that had been painted after it left the factory?

GRNC Looking Into the Questionable Posting of the NC State Fairgrounds

Last fall, I wrote a post about the NC State Fairgrounds being posted against carry with “No Weapons” signs during the NC State Fair. I went through all of the relevant statutes that I could find about concealed carry, and I wasn’t able to find the legal justification for the state to post the signs that they did. I pushed the post from last year out to the Facebook group again this week, and we …

The Twenty-First Century Scout Rifle

So because Ruger did a stupid (making the Scout rifle in 5.56 which will sell like hotcakes despite not fitting the original criteria) and Col. Cooper failed to anticipate the invention, thirty years ago, of the Aimpoint T-1, the scout rifle is dead? Nah, I think it’s more alive than it ever was. Just update the specs a little to include red dots. The point of the scout rifle spec was to dream and encourage …

Panera Non-Bans Guns Too

Another business bans respectfully requests that you don’t bring a gun into their stores. Yawn. “To this end, we ask that guns not be brought into this environment unless carried by an authorized law enforcement officer,” the statement said. But then there’s this at CNBC: While the request is new, Panera plans to continue to follow state and local laws regarding firearm policy. The chain also won’t ask employees to enforce the new request or …

Today Show: Keep Wasp Spray Handy for Home Invaders

Today on the Today Show, Jeff Rossen talked about how to protect your family from a home invasion. It starts out pretty benign. Keep your bedroom doors open so you can hear noises, bring your car keys into the bedroom so you can punch the panic button, etc But then… Zeins also suggests keeping another item in your bedroom: “Buy a can of wasp hornet spray in the hardware store or the supermarket, keep it …
