Several months ago I was contacted by a coworker asking about purchasing a handgun for self protection. He asked how it works in North Carolina, and I explained the whole process of needing either a Pistol Purchase Permit or Concealed Handgun Permit for any handgun purchase, no matter where he buys it. He seemed satisfied with the information, and we didn’t speak about it again until last week. Last week he approached me and said …
Read More »On Campus Armed Robbery at my Alma Mater
Dorm room. Middle of the afternoon. Robbery. Gunpoint. A whole bunch of bad news. Sounds like these criminals were pretty brazen, and I’d bet they are well aware that guns aren’t allowed on campus or in the dorms. In fact, WMU bans basically all forms of defensive weapons on campus, including pepper spray, and other items (I’ll admit, I carried a 3.5″ razor sharp Benchmade folder all 5 years I was a student there…) and …

I love the folks at Ares Armor. When I first came across them they were fighting for their first amendment right to keep their billboard up even though the city where their store is located wanted it to be taken down. Then they got raided by the BATFE, and started selling the hilarious “BATFE Approved” AR-15 lower parts kits. This is just some of the hijinks they’ve been involved over the past couple of years, …

A frightening video was released by the Arlington, TX Police department yesterday showing a woman being pulled from her car at an ATM by a subject with a gun, and being forced into the trunk. I don’t want to downplay the seriousness of the situation by Monday morning quarterbacking it too much, but there are a few lessons from the video that we can all benefit from: Your car is a great weapon. It’s big …
Read More »New IDPA Divison: Compact Carry Pistol
Flying a bit under the radar of the firehose of SHOT Show news coming out this week is this announcement from IDPA, sent to members via email: We are happy to announce that the membership clearly told us that they wanted a Compact Carry Pistol (CCP) division. The full details of that division will be coming out shortly but competitors and MD’s can start making plans now. The division is based on ESP but the …
Read More »Frightening Pranks: How Often Does Someone Pull A Gun?
Crusing around on Reddit tonight, I came across this story about a girl who was set up to be on the TV show “Scare Tactics”. “I’m not sure if this counts or not, but my dad put me on the TV show, Scare Tactics. The episode never aired, because I pulled out a gun…” She was set up by her father, who didn’t know that she carried a gun. Without telling the whole story here, …

Okay, so the results of this video shouldn’t be all that surprising, but I thought the slow-mo footage was pretty cool and worth sharing. Post by National Geographic Channel. If you’ve watched any ammo tests on YouTube the amount of water that the bullet penetrates is about what you’d expect, but I thought balloons were an interesting way to illustrate it. I’d like to see it again with different rifles.
Read More »I Won’t Be At SHOT Show
I’ve been getting a lot of folks asking if I’m going to be at SHOT show, and the answer is: nope. I’ll be honest, back when I first started blogging/podcasting, I thought SHOT show was the Mecca of places to go for bloggers, but these days I’m really not all that interested in going to the show. I hate asking companies for free stuff to review, and I’m not really interested in filming an advertisement …
Read More »‘Tarheel Traveler’ on NC’s Carbine Williams
Last week the WRAL ‘Tarheel Traveler’ segment was about Carbine Williams, an NC resident best known for creating the M1 Carbine. I tried to embed the video here on the site, but it seems that they don’t have a way to do that. If you click here, it’ll take you to the video on WRAL’s website. It’s a well done, interesting piece. Also, if you’re in the Triangle area, and you’d like to see some …
Read More »Regarding the ATF crack down on the Sig brace
In classic FedGovCo fashion, ATF has dumped this Sig brace letter after business hours on a Friday before a 3-day Gov weekend. If you haven’t seen it, I’m sure you will. The most worrying thing about this announcement is the way the online gun community is tearing it’s hair out, blaming people for writing in asking for clarification of the regulation. We have no idea if that is what caused ATF to make this ruling, …
